Welcome to the old Soviet Union

The caldron in Washington today reminds me of something. The collapse of the Soviet system. Nearly 30 years ago.

It collapsed under the weight of corruption. And because government did not deliver what people wanted. And because the Soviets could not reform their system. They tried to, Gorbachev and Yeltsin did. But they failed.  Old hard-liners fought the reformers to the death. The death of their system.

Our system is utterly corrupted. The players are so mired in corruption they don’t recognize it. Politicians feel it is normal to grub for money. Normal. Constantly.

Simple fact: You cannot hold a leadership position in Congress unless you raise millions for the party every year. The leaders in Congress are prostitutes.

Example: A former congressman told me the Leader of the House ordered him to hit up certain companies for donations. Companies about to appear before the House committee he headed up. Virtual extortion. Pure corruption.

Our laws are paid for by lobbyists. And their clients. Our tax system is virtually constructed by and for special interests. Congress ignores the will of the people on various major issues. Congress jimmies the system to make it impossible to dislodge them.  Pols protect each other from prosecution that you and I would face for sure.

The sad truth is that money grubbing is – for the politician – the number one job. And number two. And number three. In Washington, money talks. And shouts. Insists. Orders. Demands. Wins.

Like the old Soviet system we seem unable to reform. Big money gums up attempts to reform. It buys off the pols. It wages war against those who try to reform the mess.

In our last election the best the corrupted parties could come up with were two thoroughly disliked candidates. One of them was the queen of Washington-style corruption.

We resemble the old Soviet system. In many ways. And perhaps we will see our system collapse.

I wrote earlier of President Harry Truman. He said if you want a friend in Washington you had best buy a dog. Trump came to Washington with few friends. And most dogs there would chomp his leg. Nobody owed him any political favors. He threatened to drain the swamp. Critters of the swamp attacked him from the get go.

The cries for impeachment are shrill. What are the crimes?

Russians messed with our election? Nothing new. Done for years. We messed with theirs. We spent billions to destroy their system. They return the favor.

Russians collaborated with Trump? Zero evidence thus far. Which is curious. Leakers galore want to bring down Trump. They have leaked a mountain of stuff. But so far, no evidence of collusion. Yes, curious.

Trump asked Comey to halt the FBI’s Flynn investigation? According to a Comey memo leaked but not printed. Also curious. Because Comey wrote the memo months ago. Supposedly he felt there was obstruction of justice. But he did not report it.  Not reporting is called breaking the law. Big time. Especially if you head the FBI. Yes, curious.

Trump revealed national secrets in an Oval Office meeting with Russian officials? Impossible. Because the President has absolute power to reveal any secret. Also curious.  Because two top security guys who were there deny the story. So does our Secretary of State. He was there. So does Putin, who offers a transcript.  Yes, curious.

This impeachment stuff seems like weak tea.  Until and unless somebody defines a crime that Trump committed. Really defines it.

Meanwhile Washington bubbles up a barrage of purely poisonous stuff. Big Media spew the same poison. Much of it is inspired by and funded by critters of the swamp. Big Media are as much a part of the swamp as the politicians.

Such critters resist reforms. Reforms in our education systems that virtually punish inner-city kids. Reforms in our open borders. Reforms in our tax system that throttles entrepreneurs. And confounds individual taxpayers. Reforms that would shrink government.

The critters resist, resist. Like the hard-liners who fought reforms in the Soviet system. They resist anything that might disrupt their sweet deals and arrangements.

They will battle reforms to the death. Possibly to the death of our system.
